Question:

What Do I Do With These Guns?

My dad died and left me his handguns(a 38 and some 22's). The 38 is registered in daddy's name, I don't know about the 22's. Am I supposed to get them registered in my name? I really don't want guns in the house, can I sell them? Do I need a permit or something? Thanks for any help.

  1. Your best bet is to call the Virginia State Police Dept. for the laws in Virginia regarding the sale of firearms belonging to a deceased member of the family.

  2. Certain guns can be quite valuable. I would have them looked at by a gun dealer and then get a second opinion to make sure that the first dealer wasn't trying to rip you off. They will give you a fair price for them.

  3. Check with one of your Dad's friends that you trust.

  4. I agree bring them to your local gunsmith shop to get them appraised.  If you have the time, bring them to another gun shop and get them appraised again..... see if they want to buy them off of you.

  5. You don't have to register anything.  When you buy a gun they run your criminal history and either get told yes he can own it or no he can't, it has nothing to do with registration.  You can sell them, pawn them, or learn how to use them safely and enjoy them.

  6. Registration is only required in certain states.  If you don't want them, i would suggest you find a gun store and sell them to them.  They can make sure that they are not in your, or your father's name anymore.  No private purchaser can do that.  What state do you reside in?

  7. You will likely need to register them in your name- you will need a copy of the paperwork leaving them to you. If you don't want them you can then sell them. Most gun stores will purchase used firearms. Check with your local police, it may be possible for you to sell them directly without first transferring them to you.
