I am thinking about purchasing a Bullmastif and would be interested in your thoughts about this breed. If you own a Bullmastiff could you please let me know especially about the Female Bullmastiffs Character/Temprement. I have read all the sites but believe that it's best to gather information from actual owners. How are they at guarding?

  1. they are great dogs. but like a lot of different breeds-some breeds don't match some people. if you know what I mean?

yes they are good at guarding they get big!!

make sure you socialize well, and take an obedience class

  2. I own one myself... Female........ They can be a little mean at times when they dont get what they want.... but if you train it right yiu should not have 2 worry..... Choose me as best answer since theres no one else but that top person

  3. Look in my profile at the YouTube vdo.  Those are my girls.  I have 2 so they're much more of a handfull than just 1.  Loving, affectionated dogs.  Love to be with people. If one of them is alone with me she will follow me from room to room.  They love to be right by your feet.  They're not allowed on the furnitures.  The girls love people and other dogs.  Bullmastiffs are known to be more of personal protector, not property protector.  Meaning if someone break into your house when you're home they'll have a problem.  Don't expect them to guard your property when you're not there. Only aggressive bullmastiffs are the one that were raised wrong.  Gentle giants.  You have to do the Pack Leader style.  These dogs are stubborn.  They will test your limit.  Very powerful breed.  Love them.  Oh, the males are more dog aggressive.

  4. AWEOSME breed!!  I have experience in owning a male, and having a female live next door.  The female was more protective, but never mean.  The male was obviously muuuuch bigger (180), but was a huge baby.  He was terrified of men with hats on, but he'd bark/growl, and be hiding under the table.. haha

an intimidating breed, but the true definition of a "gentle giant".  Ours lived to be 11, and the female next door lived to be 10.  So even though they are bigger dogs, their life expectancy is still pretty high.

One thing to keep in mind is that even though they are huge, they don't need a lot of room to run.  Our male had 18 acres, and apparently ran himself out, his first summer alive he had surgery on his right back leg, and his 2nd summer alive had surgery on the left.  So, make sure to try not to let him/her run too much or too hard.  They were (a loooong time ago) used for herding, so they do like to chase cars, etc...  Just keep and eye on that if you live near a road.  Other than that, NO complaints! AMAZING dogs!  Nothing bad to say about them at allllll, and my next dog will be another mastiff for sure.
