What Does 'Saw'-Filing Fingernails Do?

Why is it often advised not to file fingernails in a 'saw' motion and to file them in the one direction? What problems, if any, does it cause?

  2. Hiya, if you saw at your nails you will weaken them, which will cause them to snap or split.
