you speed up then press the "cruise control"button.....then it stays at that speed with out having to put your foot at the peddel.

It means you put your foot down get the car up to a certain speed then press a button and the car remains at that speed, even if you take your foot of the accelerator, the car automatically puts it back down again, if you apply the brake slightly the car comes back under your full control. you can rest your accelerator foot then.
