What Does His Prison Number Mean?

I was just wondering if the letters in a prisoners I.D. correspond to the offence he commited or the risk he poses?

The letters are MR followed by 4 numbers.

Also, in the UK, is there a definitive way to find out why a person is in prison. I know in the US it is seen as public knowledge, is it the same here?

  1. The inmates DOC (division of corrections) # obviously is used to indentify the inmate. I know that at the county jail by where I live it is a serious of 5 numbers like DOC #12345. The number is one that stays with you in our system. Like if u get out and a year later go back to jail you still have the same one. When the jail types in this number all of the inmates info. & charges will come up. The DOC # most likely symbolizes the persons degree of charges and the pod level they stay on.  To see public records go to the clerk of courts website for the area you live. There should be a criminal offender lookup that you can do with the persons name or their court docket number.

  2. The letters are HM which stands for 'her majesty's' prison service. The numbers are a file number and do not relate to the prisoners crime or service due.

    Hope this helps,
