  1. In order to better rip you off, printer manufactures have put chips on their cartridges. when the printer reads the chip, if it determines they're not genuine brand name, it refuses to recognize the cartridge. when the cartridge is empty, it sends a signal which basically self-destructs the chip so it cant be re-used. some companies sell compatible cartridges without the chip and expect you to find a working chip from another cartridge. For the reason I just explained, this often doesnt work. When buying compatible cartridges  1) make sure they contain the chip   2) make sure they will work with your printer. For example, the Epson T069 cartridge will work with many printers, but compatibles often fail with the later models due to chip changes.  3) make sure there is a money-back guarantee if it fails.  One company which fills all three conditions for Epson printers is http://ccs-digital.com/ink.asp   I have been using these cartridges for about ten years. For other brands, go to ebay but keep the 3 requirements in mind.
