well the word islam is an arabic word deprived from tasleem which is giving in to god , also it sounds a lot like salam which is peace.. for me islam is a way of life , islam is what makes me free and what gives me peace of mind, i am proud to be a muslim although sometimes i am sad for muslims who are oppressed bec people have a wrong idea about islam based on ignorance, islam is the religion of peace in my opinion

The word Islam means total submission to Allah's will.

To me Islam is religion of two halves. Its peaceful half and its more violent half. One of my favourite verses in the Qur'an is:

Surah 2:256 "Let there be no compulsion in relgion"

But later on we have this

Surah 9:5 "But when the forbidden months are past, then fight and slay the Pagans wherever ye find them, an seize them, beleaguer them, and lie in wait for them in every stratagem (of war); but if they repent, and establish regular prayers and practise regular charity, then open the way for them: for Allah is Oft-forgiving, Most Merciful."

The message is clear - fight them unless they repent. Textbook compulsion.

Also the example of Muhammad can be both merciful such as when he showed grace to the Meccans after they rejected him. But in terms of his treatment of women he was often barbaric:

"..a woman from Juhaina came to Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) and she had become pregnant because of adultery. She said: Allah's Apostle, I have done something for which (prescribed punishment) must be imposed upon me, so impose that. Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) called her master and said: Treat her well, and when she delivers bring her to me. He did accordingly. Then Allah's Apostle (may peace be upon him) pronounced judgment about her and her clothes were tied around her and then he commanded and she was stoned to death. He then prayed over her (dead body). Thereupon Umar said to him: Allah's Apostle, you offer prayer for her, whereas she had committed adultery! Thereupon he said: She has made such a repentance that if it were to be divided among seventy men of Medina, it would be enough. Have you found any repentance better than this that she sacr ficed her life for Allah, the Majestic?"

Islam means safe. Whoever embrace it, is considered safe in the arms of god.

Islam is made up of two root words, Salam which means Peace and Silm which mean Surrender. Comparatively if we analyze it's meanings, it will be "Attaining Peace by Surrending one's will to Allah."
