What Editing software do i need for a documentary?

I'm doing a documentary on al capone for history day and need to know any good editing software i'll need. Were trying to go all the way to nationals! The software has to be able to add music, animation, text, pictures and so forth. We want our video to be the best out there so if anyone can help that would be great!
