There are different types.

Phones mostly use .amr and .mp3, .midi &.mmf.

It also depends on the type of phone you are using as .amr is nokia specific format.

They used to be PolyPhonic and MonoPhonic mainly in the early 2000s. Nowadays, most Mobiles can support MP3, 3GP and MIDI Formats (among others) so most music files can be used as Ringtones. on my Sony Ericcson however, the default ringtones are all MIDI files.
