  1. studs

  2. Jonboy has it pretty much sorted.  6 studs for the backs, 8 is an absolute must for rugby in the tight 5, almost compulsory for the loosies too although personal preference can decide it.

As for brands... I tell all the players I coach to stay away from Nike and Adidas.  From personal experience, I can't stand these two for Rugby boots.  I find they spend more time making the dang things look pretty than they do making them last more than 20 games.

I like Canterbury boots and Mizuno's but the best pair I ever had were actually the cheapest pair I ever bought, they were Puma's.  I bought them for practices but ended up using my $130 boots at practice and the $50 bargain bin Puma's for games.  They are light and flexible and lasted a long long time.... until I left them in the Te Kauwhata dressing rooms... DANG IT!

If you do go back on the wing then I am sure you know that your choice of hair gel and accessories are a much bigger concern for you parasites in the backs.  You are instantly disliked by the forwards but if you let your pretty face go, you'll be abandoned by the backs as well.  HAHAHAHAHA

LOL, you should move to the forwards then!  Thats where the game is won anyways.  Use your speed on the flanks, you are around the ball for the entire 80 minutes and best of all, you get to mess up the backs hair after you smash them!

  3. Rugby boots are made of heavier material to protect your feet.

  4. Rugby Boots. Football boots are useless for playing rugby and in some cases illegal.

  5. You can't wear football boots to play rugby. There are very strict rules on the size, materiel and shape of the studs that can be used.

If you're not sure what position you are going to play go for a middle of the road boot such as the Adidas Flanker. I played for years and have played every position on the pitch bar hooker, most of the time I was in the back row.

  6. depends what position you are playing. If you are a tight forward you will need a pair of rugby boots with 8 sprigs.

If you are in the backs get a pair of boots with 6 sprigs (or keep your football boots).

Loose forward - its your call. I used to play flanker and I went for 6 sprigs, some people go for 8 though.

So if you are in the backs or are a loosie you will be fine with your football (soccer) boots. You can still go for a pair with 8 sprigs if you really want. It provides you with more grip (and gives you more bits of steel to leave some nice artwork on other people's backs). A light pair of 6 sprigs is better if you are after speed and agility. This is why the majority of backs go for 6 sprigs.

Next you need to look at sprig size.... have 2 sets, short and long. Shorter sprigs for harder grounds, these are usually half metal and half plastic/rubber. Longer (full metal) sprigs for muddy/wet grounds.

Good call on the boots hawkeye, my last pair were Puma's and they are still in the cupboard in good nick, waiting for some action.

Definately move into the forwards mate!! It will be the best decision you will ever make. Chuck yourself into the tight five for a little while, you gain a new appreciation for the game doing the hard yards. Otherwise all 3 loose forward positions are mint to play.

  7. depends on wether your'e playing or watching!!

  8. Rugby boots are tougher for kicking the tripe out of your opponent.

Alternatively gold sequined slingbacks will confuse them ....

  9. Slippers are good.

  10. football boots should be fine for rugby
