What Freezer brands are the same?

Like cars i know 2 brands can be the SAME car, like the Ford Torus and the Mercury sable are the same car. What appliance brands are the same. I'm looking for a small 5-6 cuFt Chest style freezer and i'm looking for the best price. some company names i have never heard of and i'm wondering if they are the same as a name brand. Example- Hotpoint, GE, energy star, whirlpool and maytag, are any of them the same EXACT thing? I'm just your average consumer looking to save some money. Thanks for the help

The thing that's always worked the best for me when I'm buying an appliance is to read the most recent 'Consumer Reports' article about that appliance. CR tells you what to look for and look out for, points out any 'corporate twins' you may encounter, and gives ratings of many specific products. Even if I choose to ignore their recommendation, at least I've made an informed decision.

Btw, the on-line site requires a paid membership for most of the ratings, but most libraries subscribe to the magazine, so you should be able to find it somewhere near you for free. In case you're not familiar with it, 'CR' accepts NO advertising and is supported entirely by membership and subscription revenue, so they can be completely unbiased in testing and reporting.
