Question:

What GPS is best? Tomtom or Garmin? (Or Magellan?)?

I would like to read some user opinions on how Tomtom measures up to Garmin. I've recently moved to Southern California. I can read maps well enough but I'm more interested in having a tool for moving from one point of interest to the next.

I've read reviews to the point of getting dizzy. What I've made out is that Garmin and Magellan are technically superior in terms of Navigation while Tomtom is more user-friendly and cheaper.

I'd love to read impressions or opinions from other people, especially those that have used both.

Thanks.

  1. Garmin is my brand, it's like a Timex Tonka truck! Can't hurt it & get you there on time.

  2. Consumer Reports rates Garmins generally as their top units.  We have a low-end Magellan and are fine with it too.

Don't put too much thought into it ... all 3 are fine GPS manufacturers.  Can't go wrong with any of the 3, if you ask me.  But yeah, if you don't set your mind on one, it's like going to a restaurant that has 80 items on the menu and everything sounds good.  Just pick one, use it ... and you won't be lost anymore!

  3. jimjim is the best

  4. I have a lower end Garmin.  It has really been reliable and accurate.  I don't know much about Tomtoms, but I have heard good things about them.

  5. I have a tomtom! The bad thing about it is its safety lock, you have to stop every time you want to adjust something o change the route. This is the first GPS I have ever had so I can't say about the other ones. I can tell you some things about tomtom.

Tomtom is easy to use and once you get it you'll know where to find everything etc and how to navigate. But sometimes, Tomtom will give you a longer route when there actually is a shorter route. Sometimes Tomtom will take you in circles for no reasons. I kinda like Tomtom but he/she/its kinda annoying sometimes. It has a small screen but can be attacked anywhere in the front of your car. It also has a battery plug. You don' HAVE to drive with Tomtom, you can choose "walking distances" or "biking distances" or avoid motorways or avoid toll charges. I guess its pretty good because all you need is something that gets you from point A to point B.

Oh and I read that Tomtom is the best one used in Australia (but I dont reckon it is).

  6. Buy a JIMJIM...You will not go wrong with it.
