  1. There are endless places to get unique things to take back with you. Hotels, Museums, Golf Cubs etc. all have gift shops plus there are stores  all over the city.

Your corporate buddies might like something from one of the gift shops at the golf course and Jo'burg has lots of very good golf courses.

Book stores - there is a wide variety of terrific books about South Africa that are not readily available elsewhere. South Africa: Visual Celebration by Elaine Hurford or

This Is South Africa by  Peter Borchert

are two possibilities out of hundreds.

South Africa makes some very lovely wines

There are some wonderful artisans in South Africa with a wonderful eye for the native wildlife. I have the most beautiful and unique walking stick /cane with lions carved on it.

The site below has pictures of some possibilities. The menu on the left may help you decide on types of gifts according to age, type, gender etc.

cakes has mentioned that ostrich eggs are delicate - and they are. But if you have never seen one you should know that delicate when used to describe ostrich eggs is not the same as delicate when used to describe chicken eggs. By comparison they are very thick and very strong and can withstand a fair amount of abuse.

Miss Bounty mentioned a vuvuzela - that is a kind of a horn that is a great fun thing to blow at football games etc. In North America I would be tempted to take one to a hockey game. :o)

    Hope this helps a bit.

  2. Here are 3 good places to look around.  Each has a list of things that they supply.  Generally, glass beadwork, small wooden sculptures, necklaces are the smallest to carry.  Ostrich eggs are a little fragile and should be taken in hand luggage as the baggage is sometimes handled so roughly that things do get broken.

  3. There is a HUGE souvenir shop in Joburg International Airport. I bought glass bead necklaces, a beautiful wristband made of safety pins (!), a fluffy monkey for my youngest one, postcards and stamps.

My colleague bought an ostrich egg and brought it home safely.

On a previous trip, I went to Sandton shopping mall and came home with teeshirts and South African music Cds.

  4. Try one of the many craft markets in Johannesburg. Go to www.joburgtourism.com and click on "arts and crafts". All the addresses etc are there.

  5. Beautiful Ostrich eggs that are carved or painted - Once you are in JB , you will find a load of beautiful souvenirs at good rates- BUT do bargain a bit- A lot of wooden artifacts are also a good buy

  6. a vuvuzela

  7. Try like a t-shirt or something simple. But make sure whatever you get isn't food, cuz they will band you from bring it back to the states!

  8. Amarula liquer
