Kelly Johnson applied at Lockheed in 1932 and was turned down for lack of experience.  He got his aeronautical engineering degree and reapplied in 1933 and was hired as a tool and die designer.  He was instrumental in designing the P-38 Lightning fighter and designed the Hudson bomber by himself and after redesigning it to British RAF specs, procured an order for 200 of the aircraft which flew throughout WW2.

    Kelly Johnson ran the famous Lockheed "Skunk Works" which was responsible for planes such as the U-2, SR-71 Blackbird, F-104 Starfighter and the F-117 Stealth fighter.
