Question:

What Graphic Novel Should I Use for a Presentation?

In my class, we have to do a 30 minute presentation on a graphic novel. Everyone is picking Alan Moore, Neil Gaiman, Blankets, Maus.... I love that stuff, but I wanted to see if I could find something that everyone hasn't already read. Do you guys have any ideas for some not-as-well-known graphic novels?

  1. Ask your teacher if you can do a report on a book ABOUT comics and graphic novels - there's a good one called "Understanding Comics" by Scott McCloud, actually written in comic form.  If not:

Persepolis" is the true story of author / artist Marjane Satrapi, growing up in Iran during the early 80's.  It also covers time she spent at school in Europe, and her return home.  While the story is often frightening and sad, there's also a humorous edge as Satrapi stands up to her teachers or buys heavy metal tapes at the underground market.  The story was recently made into an Academy Award nominated film.

Other ideas might be The Crow by James 'O Barr, or The Gunslinger Born by Peter David and Jae Lee (a recent adaptation of part of Stephen Kings Dark Tower series).

  2. You could try something a little "wacky" like The Adventures of Tintin. I'm more of a manga person myself, and I would recommend something like Blade of the Immortal since the art is quite different from the usual fare.

  3. This should help you find some good ones:

(p.s.  thanks for asking the question... while glancing at the list on the wikipedia page, I learned that "Maus" was a pulitzer prize winner - neat.  )
