I've had a parakeet that was given to me for about 3-4 weeks.Earlier today he was just fine, then all of a sudden,he was not making noise,he was unable to fly, then evenually could not sit or stand, then he died.

For some reason he ate his droppings...could this have been the reason why?

Could it have been a cold/flu?

He had very heavy breathing at first,so I thought it could have been a fatal bacteria disease...?

After he died,I noticed he was certainly not his regular size anymore,he looked alot skinnier, than he was when when he was alive? What was wrong?

  1. If you're not sure how your bird died, you can have your bird's body autopsied by an avian vet examiner. Hopefully this will tell you what caused your bird's death.

p.s. I'm very sorry to hear your bird died...I had many parakeets and they all died :''(

  2. If his droppings were dry when he ate them then it sounds to me like he may have choked on them.  When parakeets die, they are often more thin immediately.  I'm sure there is a reason, but unfortunately I don't know it. Maybe loss of air from the body. Parakeets are so sweet and delicate.  It's awful that you can lose them so easily.

  3. A lot of birds will fluff their feathers when they are feeling ill, so it can be difficult to tell if they are losing weight.  I have no idea what might have killed him, but it sounds like he was sick.

One killer of birds is nonstick coating in pans like teflon.  When it overheats, it gives off fumes that are fatal to birds, even if the bird is in another room.  I don't know if you were cooking today, but it's just a thought--birds have very sensitive respiratory systems.

  4. Him eating his droppings probably had something to do with it.  He could have been sick and then it was in his droppings and then he ate them and his system just crashed.  I'm sorry that he died.

    I hope I helped!

  5. yeah, that happens alot with rare parakeets for some reason..it was probably just a disease or stress related.

  6. Sounds like he starved to death...did you monitor his food intake? Water intake? Stool frequency? How old was he? Where did he come from? When was his last avian vet appointment?

    Sorry for your loss.
