Question:

What Houston restaurant should I choose for my birthday?

My birthday is Tuesday, and I want to go eat with my boyfriend. Money is not an issue, I can choose anywhere in the Houston area. I'd like somewhere new, as we always "recycle" the same old places. I'm vegetarian, so I'd like somewhere with at least a few choices for me. I love a good glass of wine. No Asian food, and we are on the east side of Houston. Galveston is too far, Sugarland is too far, but downtown, Galleria area, Montrose area, Rice Village, Upper Kirby, midtown, all of those are fine. Thanks in advance!

  1. The Melting Pot is a great restaurant! Its on Westimer in Houston. They have an extensive wine list. The concept is fondue, you share a cheese fondue (spinach artichoke is the best) then you eat a big loaded delicious salad, next is your entree (you cook your own food, dont worry its easy and fun)(they have a vegetarian platter with ravioli, artichoke, asparagus, tofu, peppers, and served with red potatoes, broccoli, squash, and mushrooms. If you get the oil base, they have a sauce to stuff and fry the mushrooms.SO GOOD! The only thing is if your boyfriend wants to eat meat, he might have to do it after you cook, if you have a problem with meat cooked in the same pot.

Anyways, after that you eat a chocolate fondue of your choice (12 to choose) and its served with cheesecake strawberrys marshmellows brownies and more!

The atmoshpere is fancy and great for a birthday to spend about a 2 hour quality time meal.

    EnJoY!

    Happy birthday!

  2. There are plenty of vegetarian Indian restaurants. Give one a try.

  3. To respond to the other suggestions you've gotten: Mark's is good, but I didn't feel like it was as good as it was hyped up to be - and definitely call in advance to ask what vegetarian options they can make for you, since they are *not* part of the regular menu.  Same thing with Hugo's - it was good - but not great - and the vegetarian options are not going to be as exciting or innovative as the meat entrees.  Dessert at both places are fantastic, though!

For easier vegetarian options, I really like T'afia, which does a vegetarian tasting menu and Benjy's in Rice Village.  T'afia is currently closed but will reopen in time for your birthday on 8/12.  I don't know if you count Indian-fusion as "Asian" food - if you don't, Indika is very good as well.

Good luck!  As a vegetarian and former Houstonian, I know it's a little tough to find good veggie fine dining over there!

  4. i think hugo's is really nice especially the gourmet mexican feel because we r in texas! and its not too expensive plus i think it has a good bar

  5. Mark's is a lovely restaurant for a celebration. They have many vegetarian starters but I'm not sure about entrees. I would call to see if they have something you would like. The food is awesome, service is great, and atmosphere is wonderful. I went for my birthday and it was the best birthday dinner I have ever had.
