A hydraulic ram will require a hydraulic pump and some plumbing as well.

How about an electric solenoid or a pneumatic cylinder used with a small compressor?

The best place to look for stuff like this on the cheap is at military surplus stores. Alternately you can go to Grainger's http://www.graingers.com . They have almost anything industrial-type you could want at a good price.
