What IF.............?

Question

What if Tommy Morrison had gotten past Ray Mercer and won the right to fight Larry Holmes in the Title Elimination Fight of Febuary 92

Would Tommy's Frightening Laser Left Hooks penetrate Larry's "Rope a Dope" type techniques and knock out the 42 year old? OR Would the sly Ole Master, Larry give the Duke the same embarassing Boxing lesson that he gave Ray Mercer?

Who wins this potentially Thrilling match?

Tommy was awesome for the 1st three rounds against Mercer, but he was way too tense and he burned himself out.  If he would have won that fight, logic says he wouldn't have corrected those mistakes and he would have come out blazing against Holmes, firing everything including the kitchen sink.

Holmes was crafty.  I am sure some people will think that with Tommy's natural power and athletic ability, he would be able to get to Holmes like Tyson did and score a KO win.  But I don't think so.  Holmes weathers the early storm and dominates the 2nd half of the fight, dropping Morrison, en route to a late stoppage or decision win.

Styles make fights and I just see Holmes being too crafty for the version of Morrison who was all guns blazing and very tense.  The Morrison who boxed his way to a decision over Foreman would have a better chance, using his natural athletic ability but in a smater way.

Tommy would always have a chance to knock anybody out with his left hook...  but i think Larry would prove 2b too ring smart for Morrison and Larry's long jab would give tommy plenty of trouble. but then i'm thinking of how great Tommy did against George Foreman.. its a tough call but i say Larry Holmes wins on points if he can avoid solid left hooks to that big head of his.

if tommy had gotten past mercer, he would have made the same mistake against holmes....unloading bombs, trying to get his man out of there, wearing himself out, and getting stopped in the mid rounds.

in all honesty, every boxing purists knows that if there was ever such a thing as a white hope, tommy ( the duke) morrison had the goods, he just had very poor handlers who mismanaged him on his journey to the title !!!!
