What IS a hipster? And why am I always called one?

Question

A lot of people (especially my brother, he's 23, doubt he's doing it to be mean.) Are calling me a hipster. I dont classify myself as anythin, as my look is pretty casual.

Pretty much just a hoodie with a funny graphic tee underneath, skinny jeans, and grey converse. And my hair is angled on a side part.

I dont wear make up either.

Don't worry, you're not a hipster. Ignore them.

A hipster is usually not a good thing to be called...Here's a summary from urbandictionary because I'm too lazy to explain it.

"Listens to bands that you have never heard of. Has hairstyle that can only be described as "complicated." (Most likely achieved by a minimum of one week not washing it.) Probably tattooed. Maybe g*y. Definitely cooler than you. Reads Black Book, Nylon, and the Styles section of the New York Times. Drinks Pabst Blue Ribbon. Often. Complains. Always denies being a hipster. Hates the word. Probably living off parents money - and spends a great deal of it to look like they don't have any. Has friends and/or self cut hair. Dyes it frequently (black, white-blonde, etc. and until scalp bleeds). Has a closet full of clothing but usually wears same three things OVER AND OVER (most likely very tight black pants, scarf, and ironic tee-shirt). Chips off nail polish artfully after $50 manicure. Sleeps with everyone and talks about it at great volume in crowded coffee shops. Addicted to coffee, cigarettes (Parliaments, Kamel Reds, Lucky Strikes, etc.), and possibly cocaine. Claims to be in a band. Rehearsals consist of choosing outfits for next show and drinking PBR. Always on the list. Majors or majored in art, writing, or q***r studies. Name-drops. May go by "Penny Lane," "Eleanor Rigby," etc. when drunk. On PBR. Which is usually. "

Im not sure why they call you a hipster. Check out the definition below and see if you fit the description.

In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the 1940s slang term hipster or scenester began being used to describe young, well-educated urban middle class and upper class adults with leftist and/or liberal social and political views and interests in a non-mainstream fashion and cultural aesthetics. Actually defining what a hipster is can be a difficult task considering the idea that hipsters are thought to exist as a "mutating, trans-Atlantic melting pot of styles, tastes and behavior." Nonetheless hipsters are often associated with non-mainstream music and film and other products such as second-hand and or vintage clothing.

alternative lifestyle, but not quite out there like these two.

i've been called hipster and i have a side part, i wear suspenders, pencil skirts, and graphic tees, so i think it goes everywhere.

I have no clue what a hipster is besides the old work for jeans that hugged the hips. I'll be interested to know what it is.
