a breeder goes both ways. a breeder may be a dog who breeds with other dogs or a breeder may be a person who breeds the two dogs and raises the babies along with help from the puppies mother.

well a real breeder is someone dedicated to their breed, breeding to keep the breed in its standards, to the job it was intended to, to breed out breed specific health problems. to better the breed itself. now a byb, is someone who breeds dogs to just get money, no interest where or how the offspring lives or gets treated. most of these poor dogs end up getting euthanized or in a shelter in the long run.

the us is often misbreeding dogs.

Breeds for conformation to better the breed

dogs are health tested, gene tested

parents are champions

Backyard breeders,

breed anything for money

could care less about the health and testing of the dogs

A breeder is a person who has a passion for a certain breed of dogs.  (May have 2 breeds, but shouldn't have a lot....)  They usually show their dogs and breed according to Breed Standards, temperament and they try to "improve" the breed with each litter.  They will ask YOU questions to find out whether YOU are good enough for one of their pups...they will have the parents cleared for dysplasia and PRA.  A GOOD breeder will also accept the pup back at any time if something doesn't work out and will make you sign a contract.

What ISN'T a breeder....a puppy mill, pet store, someone who can't provide proof of the parents clearances....

I unfortunately just bought a pup from a back yard breeder, he was an idiot and I learned my lesson after the fact.  The pup was luckily healthy....but it's not always the case. Do your research and remember, you get what you pay for.  If you want a cheap dog, then you probably won't get one from a reputable breeder.  They put a lot of resources into making quality dogs.
