"hybrid" referes to a vehicle that has both electric and internal combustion power.

Modern hybrids have a transmission that allows the internal combustion engine to provide power mechanicly to the drive train... or to run a generator... or both.  They also have an electric motor (could be the same "machine" as the generator)

Also, nmodern hybrids have a system that actuates generators on the wheels before the friction brakes start to work.  This "regenerative braking" converts the kinetic energy of the car into power stored in the batteries to be used to reaccellerate. (appx 50% of the energy is wasted as heat... but its better than not trying)

A vehicle that uses fuel and passively generated electricity to propel it. It is theoretically a better option but the cars are far from being family friendly and the batteries are a huge fire hazard in the event of an accident. The concept is good I am just not sure it is the best we can do.

A hybrid vehicle is similar in concept to hybrid corn. With hybrid corn, two different types of corn are cross-pollinated, resulting in a better, tastier, type of corn. This is often referred to as "hybrid vigor". The seed from hybrid corn plants, however, won't produce hybrid corn. Why? It's a genetics thing.

The internal combustion part comes from, are you ready? A guy in Detroit who suffers from spontaneous combustion. That's right, he occasionally starts smoldering...

The electric part comes from a lady in Fargo, North (or is it South) Dakota, who is known  as the Cuisinart Queen. She can make just about anything in a Cuisinart.

Anyway, the guy from Detroit got together with the lady from Fargo (play the theme song from The Brady Bunch here) and they produced a hybrid vehicle. Granted, it only worked in the kitchen at first, and resulted in the instantaneous cooking of vegetables while being chopped. But industrious engineers refined the process and, VOILA, today we have hybrid vehicles capable of being driven down the road. Sadly, though, you can no longer prepare a 5-minute dinner in them. Such is progress....

It runs on electrical power but when the electrical power runs out.  It switches to gasoline mode!

Some just use a electrical engine like some lawnmowers that you plug in to run.
