  1. google is your friend, though I had previously read this info a few years back, I didn't want to s***w up the info.

In 1932, a millionaire named James Norris bought the team. Here's the rest of the story, as told by Bob Duff in his Detroit Red Wings article in Total Hockey: The Official Encyclopedia of the National Hockey League:

"Norris had been a member of the Montreal Amateur Athletic Association, a sporting club with cycling roots. The MAAA's teams were known by their club emblem and these Winged Wheelers were the first winners of the Stanley Cup in 1893. Norris decided that a version of their logo was perfect for a team playing in the Motor City and on October 5, 1932 the club was renamed the Red Wings."

Coincidence or not, the new name and logo marked a turnaround in the team's fortunes. The Detroit Red Wings made the playoffs in their first season, and won

  6. Well Im pretty sure the name "Red Wings" was in some way related to the indians.  The wheel in the logo was just added since Detroit is the motor city.

  7. Hi,

J L has posted the correct source of the Red Wing.

    google it for yourself

    GO WINGS!!!!!!!!

  8. J L has the correct answer, which any Detroit fan should already know. You still hear local anncrs refer to "Wearing the The Winged Wheel" and the Winged Wheelers. I love that logo. When I lived in the south, people were becoming Wings fans via cable because of the cool simplicity of the sweaters the Wings wore.

Unlike many pro sports teams, the Wings, Yankees, Red Sox, 49ers, Dodgers, Tigers and a few other American teams have less than instant recognition. Look at how many times the Astros have changed their uniforms, colors, logos and the rest over the years.

Prior to jet planes and monster truck t-shirt style sweaters (think Avalanche), a symbol of speed was the wing, like the winged heels of the god Mercury.

How come nobody complains about the feathers on the left side of the Flyer's "P"?

  9. They didn't first take the name, they took the symbol of the local athletic cycling association, they had the tire with a wing cause they were the Winged Wheelers.  The wheel was changed from a bike wheel to a tire due to Detroit being the motor city, and the wing was always Red so they became the Red wings
