  1. It is exactly what it claims, it boosts the OTA (over the air) signal by so many hertz (normally up to 25) It can be connected anywhere along the cable line either TV or near antennea, but most connect it close to the antennea.  It wokrs if you live furher away than 25 miles away from the main antenneas serving your community.  If your picture already recievers the signal and the picture is good then there is no sense in buying one.  It is used mostly for those who get intermittant reception.

  2. It's simply an amplifier.  Many times they are installed on the antenna mast and powered from inside the house via the coaxial antenna cable.

They can help, they can also hurt.  It depends on your situation.  I know that's a pretty vague answer.  If you are trying to receive digital signals, many times an amplifier will also amplify the noise along with the weak signal so the receiver still won't be able to decode the signal.  It can also make strong signals too strong and cause problems for the receiver.  From a consumer standpoint, the only way to know for sure is to try it.  I usually tell people to try a better antenna first.

II hope this helps.  Please return and select a Best Answer from all of those submitted.
