What do you mean in a cage for four guinea pigs? How do you know that the cage is for four guinea pigs? Guinea Pigs are social animals and need to be with eachother. I know that you at least need to have two. If you have two guinea pigs you need a cage of at least 30" x 50". Any smaller is cruel to the animal. You should never have only one guinea pig, as this is also cruel because they are so social. If you have three guinea pigs the cage has to be 30" x 62" at least. With four you need a cage of at least 30" x 76" but more is always better. You probably shouldn't house more than four together.

I would say 2- as they love their space but also company and 2 is just right because there isn't going to be that problem of exluding one oddball like there could be with 3 or 4.

Guinea pigs belong in pairs or more. However, take into consideration the amount of room that they need to exercise, the amount of waste they will produce and just generally how messy they are. I would not recommend putting 4 pigs a cage unless it is substantially large or multi-leveled, and I would definitely NOT recommend using a store-bought cage.

Also, I would like to add that if you are going to have 2 or more guineas together, try to "s*x" them (the website also covers this easy, maybe a little embarrassing, procedure) to make sure that they are all of one s*x, so you don't end up with more piggies than you can handle. Small animal vets can also perform a neuter on male piggies.
