What Is Fluorescent Lighting?

Could someone tell me what fluorescent lighting is! Thanx in advanced!

Electricity causes phosphors inside a glass tube to glow.  They do not have a metal filament like Edison bulbs.  They are highly efficient and that is why the push to use compact fluorescent is so strong.  You need to be careful in disposing of them though, because they contain Mercury.  If you break one, leave the room to let the dust settle and wear gloves when cleaning it up.  When they burn out bring them to a recycling center.  You know the really long tube lights they have in most big grocery stores, that is fluorescent lighting.  Now with the compact bulbs they have really gotten over the problem of the annoying hum and the horrible pasty color the lights gave everyone.
