This year I have grown various varieties of potato, and all have turned out really well, except they are all small......i.e, smaller than a golf ball. What is the best way to grow big potatoes?? Is there a knack to it or have I just missed something? Any help would be gratefully appreciated!!

  1. Potatoes like lots of water and lots of fertilizer!

  2. I found growing them larger was with the help of fertilizer side dressed and also I found adding a small amount of sand to the dirt i used to plant them in helped also and I don't know why but it seems the deeper in the ground and we didn't even hill them because we plant them deep enough not to sunburn worked for us but I am sure there is other ways i didn't say here like miracle grow but to me that isn't nature it's more doctored than the plain fertilize but adding the sand keep the ground loose around them.

  3. Your ground is probably too hard, and you probably planted them too late and took them up too early.  To grow a good eating potato, you need to use 2/3 compost to 1/3 'dirt' and put them in right after the last frost ... and leave them there until the day after the first frost.  You should get wonderful 'eating' potatoes that way.  I know this because I had potatoes growing in my compost pile that I left and I also planted some in my garden under different conditions.  The best were the ones with mostly compost and a little dirt that I planted right after the last frost and took up the day after the 'first frost' of the year.
