I would suggest XP 32-bit. Truth is, Vista runs at its best with at least 2GB of RAM. The CPU might just make things a bit slower in Vista, too, to be honest. Windows Server 2003 would probably also work if you're not a gamer, and if you need Vista, Server 2008 might actually be your best option. Seriously, it's lighter than consumer Vista, and conjures up memories of Windows 2000.

I say 32-bit, btw, because XP-64 bit never recieved the greatest of support, and with just 1GB of RAM it's main advantage isn't even relevant to you.

I have that exact same setup, I'm running 64-bit Vista Ultimate. I have it dumbed-down so it's not so pretty so it doesn't use up as much system resources.

I think I'd have to recommend 64-bit XP though.
