i seen a samsung lcd 1080p 40" with 120hz motion plus and a panasonic plasma 42" 720p with 480hz subdrive motion. which is better

I suspect they are 2 different things.

LCD's have motion-blur problem when LOTS of things move quickly on the screen (like when the camera pans).  To solve this - some LCD's draw the image twice as often (120 times per second) which reduces the blur.

Plasmas .. dont have the same problem. They are much faster to begin with so they dont need to refresh the screen twice as fast.

But behind both of these televisions is software that processes the image. The faster the processor - the better the image is with complex fast moving images.  The Panasonic 'sub drive motion' is marketing BS for the software and hardware they use to up-convert, down-convert and process the video image.

All the TV's have this hardware and software - but Panasonic is trying to compete for Joe-Six pack business so they toss out "480hz Sub Drive Tubo Ultra Laser ... <insert tech sounding buzz words>" to impress.

So which TV is better - look at contrast ratio, number of HDMI inputs, outputs, etc.  These are somewhat more important than the marketing terms.
