What Is The Difference Between An Acting Class & A Musical Theater Class?

It's because I want to be a actor when I grow older, and my parents say I can either take a musical theater class, or acting class, I don't know what to choose! Now next year I'm going to audition again for a incredible art school for 10th grade, and they do theater, and the school is my dream school. What should I do, and what are the difference in the classes? Thanks! =]

  1. Acting classes focuses on acting. No dancing, no singing. If there were, it was just a minor and just an addition to the character.

Musical Theater Classes include dancing, movement and singing.

  2. i dont realy see any difference in them cause i have been to both

  3. Well, an acting class probably focuses on drama and acting itself, facial expressions and staying in character and changing emotions on command. Musical class probably is the same in that way and they are both probably very similar. Except the musical class probably also focuses on singing and vocals. Think of it this way: Acting class=preparing for a straight play. Musical class=preparing for a singing musical. If it were me, I would go for the musical class!

  4. Acting Classes work on your speech and drama. That includes projection, diction, and characterization. In an acting class you would learn how to become a character, but, you would not get to sing with an acting class. The difference between musical theater and acting, is that with musical theater you will have to sing, and probably dance as well. In musical theater (not opera, because opera's are JUST singing) you will work on music as well as your acting. Now, to choose, you have to judge yourself honestly. Do you want to be on broadway? Or do you want to be in movies? Acting classes are great for both, and so is musical theater. But, you have to know if you can sing and dance. If you honestly can't sing OR can't dance, then there is no point in doing musical theater because it will require both and it will just be a waste of time. If you do acting you can focus more on what you are better at, and what has a chance at improvment. Because, quite frankly, singers are born with a voice, you don't learn how to sing, you are born with it. But, if you can sing, then I would choose musical theater. If not, I would choose acting.
