  1. Systematic random sampling - is having a system for choosing randomness. It could be choosing every 100th name in the phone book, or every twentieth person who walks by you.

Random sampling is pure randomness, no system to it. Typically done with a computer program for true randomness. In face to face random sampling, surveyors typically choose people who represent themselves. Systematic takes the bias out of randomness.

  2. I assume systematic random sampling would be such things as sampling the poor section of town, sampling rural areas, asampling only single people, whereas random sampling would be taking names at random out of a phone book,.

Sampling all voters, versus sampling only registered voters or only registered voters who definitely will vote.

  3. Toph's answer is on target except the very last part. Pure and true random sampling has fewer biases. For examaple, systematic sampling using a phone book can have repeats, not include new phone numbers, or people not listed. Thus the entire possible population is not included and becomes more of a conveinence sample.

  4. You should try to get your hands on a social research methods book written by Earl Babbie. He does a nice job explaining the differences of different types of sampling and the advantages and disadvantages of each. He has several editions, your local academic library should have a copy.

  5. Toph said exactly what I was going to say!

I'll 2nd Toph's explanation as being spot on.
