Question:

What Is The Proper Running Technique On Asphalt/Concrete?

I'm about to go to Basic Combat Training for the Army and found out we're going to be doing alot of running on asphalt. For me this smells because I get terrible pains in my legs (I think they're shin splints) when I run on those type of surfaces. I'm hoping that after a few days I'll get used to the pain.

But more importantly, I'm looking for a running technique that might possibly limit the amount of trauma on my legs. I know that on asphalt there isn't any give and your legs are absorbing all the shock when you leg strikes the ground, but perhaps this is just the way I run. I've gotten all kinds of suggestions - run on the balls of your feet, run on the heels of your feet, take longer strides, take shorter strides...

I'm just wondering which of these is the best advice for long distance running on hard surfaces like asphalt or concrete?

Thanks so much for you help.
