Question:

What Is The White Powdery Candy Served During Chinese New Years?

My mom got a lot of it for New Years, and I finally got a chance to give some to my friends to try. It's like tightly compacted "crack", if I must say. I remember on the label that it said its like a cookie or something, but it does not taste like a cookie at all.

So what is it?

  1. If it's not candy, but more cookie like, one possibility could be kuih bangkit, not very sweet but the coconut flavor & fragrance should be evident

It is quite unique and not like typical cookies using normal plain flour, white sugar & butter. I don't think it is sugee cookies which are not that white, rougher in texture & with almond flavor.

I can't think of any traditional Chinese candy eaten during Chinese New Year that fits the bill.

  2. Is it an almond type cookie?  it's kinda like compacted powder and is very crumbly. Not too flavorful, kinda like eating a piece of chalk.

  3. Is it possible it is just cubes of dextrose - powdery and slightly tart sugar?

  4. Sugar?

I know brown sugar's popular, but it seems that white sugar is just as popular, if not more.  It's often used in baking.

I know a lot of kids don't get to even see it these days, but in times when a lot of cooking was done at home (slow cooking), it was common to have both white and brown sugar in one's pantry.

It's still often found at grocery stores, so keep your eyes out.

  5. It's called Dandruff.

  6. Is it a chinese ginger candy???? I buy them a lot, they are sweet, a little spicy, chewy and covered with powdered sugar. Good for the stomach and digestion.
