What Is This Cooking Utensil?

Question

...And what is it supposed to do?

It came in a cookware set, and I have no idea what it is or what it does. At first I thought it was some sort of can opener, but that thing does NOT open cans.

It's a can opener that leaves the edges smooth, not sharp.

Like everyone else said, it is a can opener.. first you spread it open then you place the little round wheel (under the metal bar thing), so that it sits vertically on the lid right next to the cans rim. Then you press the openers handles together or spread it, depends which way shuts it together, so the wheel makes a whole in the lid, and then you just spin the thing on the side and it will open the can all around.. i hope that wasn't too confusing =]

That flat rectangular part probably has a little magnet under it to hold the lid of the can when you open it.  It is a can opener.

it is the can opener that separates the lid from the can so there is not sharp edge.

CAN OPENER

It goes around the outside edge of the side of the can.....instead of going around inside the lid of the can.

If it is a can opener that opens without leaving a sharp edge, it would sit on top of the can and cut around the can on the side.

If it came with a set of cookware maybe it is some sort of handle to a pan, mabe a baking dish.  I had a deep dish pizza pan once that came with a separate handle that you would use to grab the hot pan from the oven.

It's one of those can opener that doesn't leave sharp edges. You have to kind od line it up and start turning it and it will snap itself on the rim.
