  1. The average net annual wages in private and semi-public sectors for 2007 are 19.182 Euro for women and 23 778 Euro for men.

The average disposable income per family for 2005 was 29.696 Euro.

All data are from the French National Statistical Service

  2. 3,093 euros/month (average gross income) in June 2007 so probably a little more now. http://www.credit-ssima.fr/besoin-/actua... (paragraph before last) With the present exchange rate, it is the equivalent of $58,000/year.

In 2005, the disposable income (= net income after direct taxes) was 29,696 euros/year (average) or 25,205 euros/year (median) per household.

For detailed average disposable income by family size:

http://www.insee.fr/fr/ffc/chifcle_fiche... For instance, in 2005, a couple with 3 or more children had a net disposable income of 45,398 euros whereas as single person's was 16,888 euros. Add 2% to 3% for a 2008 estimate.

For detailed yearly data on income, purchasing power, etc, check the INSEE website: http://www.insee.fr/en/home/home_page.as...

A lot more data available if you understand French:

    EDIT:

@ jtorimo: You misquoted the article you mentioned, $28,540 being the average gross SALARY, not the average personal INCOME.

Wages/salary and income are two different notions. Not all incomes come from salary. They may be honorary fees as in the case of French doctors and lawyers (both high-income professions) or the income may be from real estate, pensions or financial investments, not necessarily from labor. Average salary is usually lower than average income, as shown by the response after mine. We must make sure to compare the same things: individual or household, salary or income, mean or median... The question was on mean (average) household income but didn't specify gross or disposable so I gave both.

$44,000 must be the US median household DISPOSABLE income, which would indeed be higher than the French one of $39,000 (25,205 euros). $58,000 (37,117 euros) corresponds to the average household GROSS income, which is around $70,000 in the US, I believe (don't take my word for it though, I didn't check).

  3. The disposable income of a household in metropolitan France was EUR 1,075 per month and per consumption unit, generally abbreviated to UC, in 1997, the last year for which figures are available. This figure is a median, splitting the population in two: one half has a higher and the other half a lower standard of living.

In order to take account of variations in the size and composition of households when comparing living standards, or income distribution, equivalence scales are used.

An overall equivalence value is calculated for each multiple-person household by summing the appropriate scale values for each household member.

In France, statisticians refer to "consumption units", abbreviated to UCs (units of consumption), with a single person counting as 1 UC, the first adult (head) of a multiple-person household as 1 UC, subsequent adults and children over 14 as 0.5 UC and children under 14 as 0.3 UC.

So a couple without children counts as 1.5 UC and a couple with two young children as 2.1 UC. Theoretically, for example, to enjoy the same living standard as a single person with an income of EUR 1,075, a childless couple would need an income of EUR 1,612.5 and a couple with two young children one of EUR 2,275.5.

  4. According to this artice the average (personal) income in France for 2005 (in dollars) is $28,540

For a family the $58,000 figure seems high to me, when you consider that in the U.S. median family income in only about $44,000  Of course this could be to different methods in calculating income.
