  1. The stories I've heard is KIng of Clubs is Alexander the Great, KIng of Diamonds is Julius Cesar, King of Spades King David and the King of Hearts would be Charlemagne

  2. There have been various popular myths about who the figures represent but if you take a look at their origin, then if they did represent anyone, it will remain a mystery.

Playing cards evolved from tile games in the far East, the earliest ones arrived in Europe in the mid 14th century via the Islamic world. These had much the same structure as those we use today. There were four suits of cups, coins, swords, and polo sticks. Of course, the game of polo was not familiar to Europeans at the time, so these became batons. In each suit there were 10 pip cards and three court cards being a King, a Rider, and a Footman. These suits are now known as the Latin suits and are still used in many countries and still with all male court cards (as are the German and Swiss suited cards). Islam does not (under most interpretations) allow the portrail of living people or creatures - these are considered God's domain - so these early court cards featured abstract patterns with their titles in beautiful caligraphy.
