  8. Venetian or Venetan is a Romance language spoken by over two million people, mostly in the Veneto region of Italy. The language is called vèneto in Venetian, veneto in Italian; the variant spoken in Venice is called venesiàn/venessiàn or veneziano, respectively. Although commonly referred to as an Italian dialect (diałeto, dialetto), even by its speakers, it does not descend from the Italian language but has its own morphology, syntax and lexicon.

Venetian should not be confused with Venetic, an apparently unrelated (and extinct) Indo-European language that was spoken in the Veneto region around the 6th century BC.

  17. of course as everybody said they speak italian because its in italy.

but your question is not stupid at all because they also speak "veneto", in english venetian.

this language with its dialects is spoken around venice all the way to portions of slovenia and croatia.

it was the official language of the republic of venice, which used to be a world power

bible portions in venetian exist since the 1800s (latin was used before throughout catholic countries) and a lot of literature (carlo goldoni is the most important author)  was written in this language.

any italians wouldnt understand much of it, though it is gettin lost more and more. there is also a political party (the "liga veneta") that pursues independence of the region of venice and would like to restore the language as an official one to be taught in schools.
