I have 60 college credits and I also am an Eagle scout. I anticipate enlisting as an E-3.

  1. The Air force does not call them MOSs; they call  them AFSCs.  Promotions up through E-4 are automatic 99% of the time irregardless of your AFSC.  There are a few programs that don't fit this model one being STEP promotions and the other being special programs that they sometimes have in place.  An example of one of these is for six year enlistees where they come out of basic with an extra stripe.  STEP promotions have a lot to do with what organization you work for and how high of rank the commander is moreso than what your job is per say.

  2. Why don't you finish college and become a officer?

  3. You cant advance, you have to do it at the same level as everyone else !i

  4. Your AFSC has nothing to do with your promotions.  To make E-4, it is automatic.  You just be good and do your job well, pass your CDC's and you'll make E-4.  E-5 is tested.  They look at your EPR scores (which includes your PT tests), awards, decorations and your test scores.  The test is based on job knowledge.  There is no one AFSC that promotes faster than any other.  You promotion rate depends on you and how well you know and do your job,

My husband also joined as an E-3.  He make E-5 in 3 years 6 months. He passed the first time he was eligible for testing.  He had to wait 12 months to sew on.   Even if you make E-4 BTZ, you will not see E-5 in a 4 year enlistment.  The faster you make E-5, the longer you have to wait to sew it on.

  5. I agree with the first person.  However, every career field will have a certain percentages of people that promote faster.  Meaning, if you're an Islamic Linguist there's not that many people in that field to promote.  If the AF needs 10 SSgt's and they need to promote 2, that's a pretty low number.  But, if you're in SF there's going to be a lot more positions to promote to.  I know it sounds confusing but a recruiter should be able to make it clearer for you.  Since you'll be going in as an E-3 you'll not have nearly as long to wait to promote to E-4.  And, since you're already ahead of the ballgame by having college and an Eagle Scout then remember Below-The-Zone.  That means that you make E-4 6 months early...which can help you test for E-5 that much quicker.  I made E-5 in 3 years and 3 months, exactly!  But, I would not have been able to "sew-on" my stripes for 13 months.  (I was medically discharged before I put the stripes on.)  If you're wanting to make a career of the AF it is possible to make E-9 in 17 years.  HARD, but not impossible.  Good luck!

  6. The first answer is right except some MOS are more open to climbing the ladder depending on how many people occupy that MOS at that base and how much better you do than those people on the ASVAB and impressing your boss. Atleast thats how it is in the Air Guard. Also everyone enlists as E-3 in the Air Guard dont let the recruiter act like he is doing you a favor.
