  1. In a word, gravity.  Water will naturally flow downhill along the path of least resistance, creating the main currents.

    Obstructions and irregularities within the waterway will cause the side currents and eddies.

    Stream channels will take irregular courses because the materials the water is running through and over will have varying characteristics, including differing rates of erosion.
