  1. For a nice reference you can refer to World Book's Typical Course of Study.  It shows each grade level and appropriate skills.

  2. In our school, we teaches 6 yrs. old the following;

    Whole numbers, ascending numbers , descending numbers; children are required to recognize numbers from 1-100 and say it orally; even numbers and odd numbers, sets, addition and subtraction (vertically and horizontally), sequencing of numbers from 1-100; filling the missing numbers from 1-100.

  3. In our country.. drilling them with spelling from one to twenty is a need.

  4. Are these children in 1st grade or kindergarten?  That really does make a difference in what you should introduce.

    It depends on the school, all districts have different standards.  Ultimately, sorting, seriation, shapes, patterns are all good.  They can sort by shape, size, color, or even sort by 2 characteristics.  Also, the previous suggestion was good as well.  Doing addition and subtraction the way suggested is good.  Having them count out and then take away, and count what is left.  You can also do the same, by having them start with 4 add 2 and count the total.

  5. provide varied examples of shapes,colors in different contexts and textures. Use grapes for adding and subtracting. Put 10 grapes on plate and ask to take 5 away, now,how many do we have left. Then once they get right they can eat.

    Flash cards are a good thing, The are at a stance with their attention span,so only for a short while.

  6. These are Washington States Grade Level Expectations for the 1st grade. (Math)

    Understand that measurement is the comparison of an attribute of an object with a unit that has the same attribute, using non-standard units.

    Understand and use a procedure to measure length, weight, capacity, time, or temperature with non-standard units.

    Recognize the properties of 2?dimensional figures.

    Use the properties of 2-dimensional figures.

    Recognize the locations of points on a positive number line.

    Understand how pictographs and bar graphs provide information.

    There are more but I don't want to bore you. Each State has it's own set of Grade Level Expectations or Standards. Go to your States Superintendents page and look up Standards.  Most of the time the there will be examples of appropriate activities to do with children.  If you want specific examples of activities you can email me. I would love to help.
