  1. I don't agree with the basic premise of using a last name, to determine nationality/ heritage.

Your last name MIGHT come from an ancestor, who originally had the last name Behrl and in fact, came from Germany.  It could also turn out that your ancestor was NOT named this, and your actual ancestor was named something else entirely, and came from Ireland.

I do understand that many teachers assign "finding the nationality" of your last name.. without much background concerning the technicalities. A name (of itself) does not have a nationality.. persons have nationalities and ancestral background (NOT the same thing).  MANY names "come" from more than one location, and none of those locations are always "original".

The accurate way is to find your ancestor of the name (including possible variations) and document his place of origin.

  2. Berl Name Meaning and History

    German: variant of Behrle.

German: habitational name from a place in Westphalia named Berl.

Jewish (Ashkenazic): pet form of the Yiddish male name Ber.
