I'm trying to find a really good as natural as possible commercial guinea pig food. I've been using Kaytee but I'm going to stop because two of my guinea pigs died recently ( 1 yesterday the other the day b4). They were perfectly healthy they had vet check ups a few months ago but they're gone now. I've researched a bit ( I started tonight) & found out that some other ppl have had their pets die after feeding them Kaytee. I'm very worried because the other couple I have the male is beginning to get skinny (which is a symptom). I've asked my vet about food & he had no suggestions. PLEASE HELP!!!!

  1. what ever food they sell at the pet shop

  2. Oxbow is a great brand when it comes to small animal diets. They have two varieties for guinea pigs:

    - Cavy Performance is specifically designed to meet the particular nutritional needs of young, pregnant and nursing guinea pigs.

    - Cavy Cuisine is specifically designed to meet the particular nutritional needs of adult guinea pigs.

If that's unable to be found, you can use Mazuri lab blocks for Guinea Pigs:

  3. I have 2 guinea pigs of my own, so here's what we do. Our previous pig lived 6 years, he died of depression from his friend dying of a stroke:( but our new ones and old ones who lived to be 4 and 6 we fed small world guinea pig food brand. You can't only feed them pellets though. Guinea pigs need pellets for nutricion, but to keep them healthy they need lettuce(romaine is a favorite of mine) cucumbers, celery, grape vines, and guinea pigs ADORE grass. This should keept them healthy and happy:)

  4. http://www.oxbowhay.com/Shop/showProduct... is supposed to be really good. I can't remember the other brands I've heard good things about.

It's probably impossible to tell if the food killed your pigs or not. Please get the remaining guinea pig to a vet ASAP. Make sure the vet is skilled in guinea pig care too, a lot of vets are not familiar with them. Check http://www.guinealynx.info/vetlist.html for a list of great vets who know guinea pigs. If you cannot find one on there close to you, try the forums on that website, there are a ton of guinea pig owners on there, I'm sure someone could suggest one.

You should keep track of your pig's weight too. If he loses any weight each day, that is a very bad sign. Weight loss can be very serious (for many reasons), so he needs to see a vet.

What is he eating, besides the pellets? He should have unlimited timothy hay, as well as some veggies/fruit (check that site for lists).

Edit: http://www.kmshayloft.com/pellets.html#t... is one of the other good brands I was thinking of. Timothy based for adults, alfalfa based for babies.
