  1. Almost all sports,Filipinos are as capable as any other group. the other answer's are partially right, the U.S and many other countries athletes are given full college  and other scholarships that allows them an almost unlimited opportunity to train also some countries such as Cuba, has no professional athletes, instead those athletes are given government sponsorships that gives them very handsome allowances and other gratuities,a Cuban boxer often competes as a amateur until they are in their middle age.

  2. P.T. is correct. I agree with his answer. He took the words out of my head.

I believe filipino's can compete in most sports but they need the resources to help their atheletes compete against the world's best.

  3. all we need to have to excel in all the sports in a world competition like olympics is BUDGET...we can obviously excel in boxing, a little bit more in swimming, track & field and others...

  4. It's hard for Filipinos to excel in any of the sports because the way you have to see it is that the Philippines is competing with world powers. The Philippines is just a 3rd world country who can't afford to spend millions of dollars like the US, China, Russia on just training. The Philippines has to spend the money on other budgets like feeding the children and helping the poor. They simply can't afford how much it would cost to compete with the "best."

  5. I believe Filipinos can excel in any sports and perhaps there are some young Filipinos out there who are born athlete but haven't expose their athleticism since there is not much sports competition in the Philippines for young athletes to be discovered well except for basketball which can be played on the streets. During the 90's, when DepEd was DECS (Dept. of Educ., Culture, and Sports), sports is part of a school activities wherein students compete from inter-school level to national level. Currently, sports is abolished as an extra-curricular activity in elementary and high school due to lack of government funding. At least, some colleges have great sports program and offer scholarship to school varsity players. That can be the best stepping stone for someone to be in the Phil. national team. But, again, Philippines doesn't have a good and solid national sports program. The Philippine Olympics Committee itself is accused of corruption. (I can't understand why would a number of support entourage outnumber the Philippine athletes.)

Poverty is also one of the reason why someone would not excel in his sports. It's a pity to see Philippine athletes who came from middle class families train in their sports and still has to go to work to earn a living unlike athletes of other nations who doesn't have to work for they are considered "professional" athletes and are being paid by their government.

I guess everything about the Philippines boils down to graft and corruption and that's been an incurable disease some politicians have.

  6. Filipinos can forget about athletics for now... the rest of the world is lightyears away from the Philippines when it comes to track and field, gymnastics, etc. If the Philippines starts TODAY to really get serious in developing and financing their track and gym athletes, MAYBE in 20 years time we'd have a shot.

I know it won't sound good but I think that if we Filipino want to win gold soon, then we must focus on doing well in sports that don't require much speed and strength. Like archery, shooting. Hey, India won a gold in shooting and everybody knows Indians ain't that very athletic people.

  7. Our athletes need money to buy the science and technology and the exposure needed for their training. Our government does not have enough (or not enough is trickling down to the athletes from the hands of our politician-sports leaders); and there are few, serious commercial sponsors. We are world-class in bowling and billiards. Paeng Nepomuceno, world bowling Hall-of-Famer, is supported by his own resources (being a rich kid himself), Bata Reyes, etal are supported by AMF Puyat. But the sports are unfortunately not in the Olympics at the moment.

  8. tong-its

  9. We have so many pro boxers now, so boxing might be the one. But there are way too many sports in the Olympics. We must have decent training facilities first.

  10. In any genuine Olympic Sport the athlete must be given the resources and support for training along with financial assistance.
