Question:

What PC resolutions does a Full HD TV support?

I have just purchased a new Sony Bravia KDL-40V4000 which supports 1080p. I have successfully connected my laptop (Dell Vostro 1700 w/ nVidia Geforce 8600 256mb graphics card) to the TV using a standard VGA cable. However the highest resolution I seem to be getting is 1366x720 or 1280x1024 which is obviously way short of the 1920x1080 which is possible on the set.

Can anyone tell me what I need to do to get the maximum resolution o the TV via the VGA input? my laptop does not have a HDMI out.

Any help is appreciated, I can't find anything on the web.

Thanks

  1. Your TV may support 1080p, but your video card probably does not. If that's the case (check the video card specs), there is nothing you can do.  (Check also that the TV supports 1080p over VGA, some TVs only support 1080p from HDMI only).
