  1. Way back when (if you are speaking of Christians) or even today (Moslems), the church was the only source of education. If you wanted to learn to read, you studied to become a priest.

    There is an interesting reference in one of Villon's poems to memorizing the "neck verse". Apparently, priests were exempt from capital punishment. As only priests knew how to read, reading a verse from the bible would get you off the hook (or scaffold, as the case may be). Unfortunately for justice, it was always the same verse, so career criminals would memorize that verse to save their necks.
