  1. Since I live in San Diego, here are a couple of things.  You can take a stroll in Balboa Park during the day then sit by the fountain and make a wish or you could go to Coronado and have a picnic on the beach by the Hotel Del.

  2. On a budget? Try Mexico, but seriously, I lived there for a couple of years back in the 70's, so I know a lot has changed.  However, my wife and I took a romantic vacation there in the 90's, and found a great little hotel at the very end of the road in Pacific Beach.  It was quiet, small, yet still close to many attractions, and on the beach.  If that is no longer available, and you don't care for the zoo or attractions of that nature, stroll the grounds of Balboa Park and laze on a hillside on a sunny afternoon.  Then find a nice spot to watch a sunset.  An hour or two drive to the East will bring you to the desert area, which is very majical in its own right, there are plenty of places to stop and enjoy the local area.  The drive up the coast to La Jolla is a great way to spend an afternoon, and maybe find another romantic unknown inn to pass on to others.  Much luck and enjoyment, Jed.

  3. Here are some  ideas of things you can do...

    1.)La Jolla

The Birch Aquarium is interesting and has great views in the daytime. You can see La Jolla and possibly scope out a spot that you and your honey would like to see up close.

Prospect has a lot of restaurants and shops to stop into. The price ranges vary, but they are all well worth it. Alfonzo's Mexican Restaurant is very good. I recommend the Whaling Bar in La Valencia Hotel. Their martinis are fabulous, order a “Whaler” (creamy smooth dessert martini). If you have an early dinner, on Thursdays martinis are $6 until 7.

2.) Encinitas(farther north up the coast)

Meritage Restaurant in the Lumber Yard has a wonderful happy hour. The appetizers are half off and large portions. After a light and comfortable dinner drive down the street and park at moonlight beach to walk on the sand and catch the sun set. Sbicca is also a great place, closer to the water (here’s their website if you want to see more… http://www.sbiccabistro.com/).

    3.) Downtown

Here are some restaurants you may want to check into, they are a bit expensive, but worth looking into

Fish Market, Lou & Mickey’s, Flemings Steakhouse, Donovan’s (new location by Petco), and the restaurants in the new Hard Rock Hotel.

In the day time, you can take a harbor cruise of the San Diego bay or take a Midway tour and have lunch on the back of the ship. There are always the shops down 4th, 5th, and 6th streets and of course Horton Plaza. Simply walking around the Gaslamp district is fun.

Just a few ideas… Congrats on your anniversary! :)

  4. Relaxing yet elegant dinner... (Gaslamp? Downtown La Jolla?)

Followed by a walk on the beach until sunset then a bonfire until you run out of wood. All you're left with is moonlight and someone special under a blanket. (La Jolla shores? PB/Mission Beach?)

    :-D

  5. A very romantic thing to do is take a walk on the beach at sunset. Then go and eat at a very fancy restaurant. That will be the PERFECT thing to do for a 10 year anniversary.

  6. I'm shocked that nobody has mentioned Old Town yet. It's a pretty neat little place if you have some time to kill. There are lots of little shops and Mexican restaurants that are pretty cheap but really good. Great atmosphere, whether you're on a budget or not.

  7. I have a low-budget and a medium-budget suggestion.

Both start with a walk along the beach in OB, at the end of Newport avenue.  Walk along the beach, out the long pier, and back.

For low budget, follow that with a visit to the Southbeach Bar & Grill and order a beer and maji tacos.  They're outstanding, and only about $3 a piece.  A two-taco dinner is a special treat.  I go there even when I'm not budgeting.

For medium budget, get back in your car and drive to Harbor Island (at the airport) and go to the C-Level lounge.  it is the less expensive half of Island Prime, and offers wonderful salads, sandwiches, and entrees for between $12 and $22.  The deserts are fantastic, too!
