Question:

What Rugby position am I the best suited for?

Next year I'm thinking of joining my college's Rugby club, to help me stay in shape, and because I miss the feeling of having my own jersey and being on a team from High School Football and Basketball.

I'm 5' 9", 165-170 pounds. I'd say I'm averagely strong and quick for my size. Probably my best trait is my endurance, I've been running every day for a while now, so my lungs are in pretty good shape.

What position in Rugby should I start training for? And how should I train for it?

Thanks alot!

  1. What year are you?  if your a freshman i might say flank or Lock, if your a senior i might say weak side winger, that's a good specalty position that needs to not fall out or get tired when the going gets tough...can you kick well?  perhaps fullback if yes, that's even more specalized than weak side wing, but you had better know how to tackle too...

but yes i might say flank would be a good position for you either way, but the best thing you can be as a rookie is a utility player, why mentally specalize and cheat yourself out of play time?  do what you can if you have a good coach he'll put you where your needed and you can PROVE your way to whatever position you really belong in...good luck, welcome to the brotherhood.

  2. Well your coach would decide that but id say flanker keep up the good sport

  3. You are not big enough for the flank position, scrum half could be the place for you.  You'll need to run all through the 80 minutes and have a lot of the ball in hand.  Really difficult to suggest a position for you but you will find your own way in time.  One piece of advice - tackle hard or you will get injured.

  4. Flanker / Mid Back - That would be were I would have you play based on  what your size and speed. Ultimately your coach will determine where you will play. Go for it though, it is an awsome sport to play... and goodluck.

  5. You shouldn't train for a specific position, unless you know where your coach is going to put you, because you might think you are best for one position, but your coach might think otherwise. You aren't really tall enough to be in the back row or second row, and not really heavy enough to be a front row. I would try and build up your leg muscles, as your coach will most likely put you in the backs, upper body strength also helps. Try and improve your speed by doing leg exercises and you could become a wing, or if your not getting faster you could try and improve your kicking game. But it will help if you try and improve all round, as in the backs most positions require mostly the same things, but with slight differences.
