What Secondary Language Should I Pick?

Question

I picked Latin, because it would look better on a college application, but my dad says I should learn Spanish, because it'll come in more handy later on in life. I can also choose from German, Chinese, and French. What should I pick?

I think, because I work in the field that employs linguist, that you should pick two languages. Chinese, Arabic, Russian; are just a few that should be studied. The world is expanding very quickly, don't be a tourist, be a participant.

If you pick Latin, the romance languages would be easy to learn, but your second language should be of a completely different root.

Your dad's right.  When do you think latin will come in handy?  Are you planning on joining the catholic church?  If not, go with spanish.

Ok I don't know if you are from the US but the most popular languages here other than English are as follows:

3.  French

4.  American Sign Language

I'd choose Spanish based on its popularity, and ASL to learn even better how to talk to my deaf in laws!

Im with your dad on this. It will help you get more jobs knowing spanish and when will you ever have a chance to speak latin,you will forget it by the time you ever get a chance to use it. Spanish will come in very handy in alot of situations so if you are really going to learn a language speak spanish.

Choose spanish because your defintly gonna need it later. Plus it looks good on a job application if you can speak spanish and i believe they pay more too.

I would stick with Latin.

Once you have Latin, picking up any other Romance Language is a piece of cake, and Latin really will help you with your English.

If you want to learn Latin, remember: it is basically a dead language. That means children do not learn it naturally from their parents. However, it has its merits to help you understand technical terms, especially in the medical field. That being said, why not learn Italian. The language is spoken by about 60 Million people and and will be simiarlily helpful for recognizing technical terms in several fields. Spanish may be the best because it is offered everywhere, whereas Italian might be limited. German is a great language, especially if you think about their economy (job opportunties) and consistent contribution in technical areas, especially upcoming areas (here) in alternative energy. Chinese. As a successful language learner, I cannot see someone starting Chinese even in high school that isn't already bilingual. The language would take a life time of study for someone without any experience do even begin to communicate simple basics, let alone gain a working knowledge of the language and becoming literate. Russian or Arabic would be good if you wish to help serve the US govt in various ways. By the way, it is a "second" language. Good luck!

i think u can either choose Spanish or French since US's neigbouring countries speak either of those two languages. I picked Spanish for my secondary language since most of people here in US can speak Spanish....=)

I agree with your dad. I took 4 years of German in high school. While it was fun I have no real use for it now. I graduated college 2 years ago and I am a school teacher in North Carolina.  Many of my students are from Mexico and speak Spanish. It definitely would come in handy to be able to communicate with them in their first language. I don't have a lot of students from Germany who I can tell "Die Stereoanlage ist kaput."  (The stereo system is broken)

ALSO make sure you take as many years as possible of whatever language you're taking so that you don't have to waste credits in college on a language!!!
