Question:

What Should I Do About My "Backwards" Puppy?

I have a seven month old Chihuahua/Pomeranian mix puppy and she has her bathroom places switched. She will go freely and comfortably in the house; on the carpet, but when we take her outside to go, she will never go outside. Recently, I caught her doing her "preparations" to go "number two" and I carried her outside, but then she acted completely frantic to come back into the house. She reacts similarly to how a trained dog acts when they want to go outside, but it's the other way around. What can I do about this annoying problem?

Also, the same puppy has a complete whining and yelping hissy fit when I go out of her sight where she can't follow me. How can I stop this? I have been using the newspaper technique, but when she sees me, she quits; paper or not.

  1. I'd get a crate and start crate training her

  2. with my chi as soon as i got her I would watch her sleep and as soon as she stirred I would pick her up ,put the leash on and walk her to her pp poo poo spot. For the first few weeks I carried her but my Patsy took to the leash quickly.take some of her poo outside to the spot you want her to go and the first few times carry her out set her down let her sniff and scratch around . don't fuss don't plead don't talk .Ignore her till she does her business... When she smells her own poo outside she will get the picture. after she goes outside ,Praise and play. To quote Cesar boundaries discipline then affection. NEVER let her sleep in your bed.A puppy needs its own bed.the bed becomes a secure place for your dog.I would let Patsy fall asleep on my chest then put her in her bed.The bed was in a laundry basket she couldn't get out of "like crating "But as she grew the bed moved to the living room and now when I tell her go to bed she knows I'm done with her and will go lay down.I'm rambling ,sorry but I hate an ill mannered dog and all it takes is a little time and patience to train a puppy rite.  I hope this helps, Remember you OWN THE DOG the dog don't own you

  3. Use behavior modification techniques which work so well with dogs:

    1) As soon as you see your puppy getting ready to go, take him outside and feed him a treat.  Praise him when he does his business.

    2) If he starts doing it inside, take him outside anyway...they don't like to be interrupted.

    3) If he does it inside, clean it up immediately and spray a pet odor remover so he doesn't get used to doing it again in the same spot.

    4) The puppy might be scared of being outside, get him used to it by giving him treats, praise and attention for being outside, even when he's not doing his business.

  4. You can't train a dog to use pee pads or newspaper, and expect them to want to go outside. A dog should go outside only so that they don't see the house as a good place to go.

Start over like she is a new puppy. Crate train her, take her outside every hour and tell her to go. Don't go back into the house til she has gone and you can praise her for it. Watch her in the house, crate her when you can't watch her.
