I just got a horse, but I have no idea of what to call him. Also, what's a good age to try to break him?

  1. perhaps a shortened version of his registered name or taken from part of it.  or even if he reminds you of someone or something.  we named a mare frosty because the weather was that when we collected her.

in britain backing is done at about three years.  then they have a break before coming into work as four year olds.

playing with youngsters can be fun but include manners in the training.

  2. according to cowboy lore it is unlucky to change a horses name once it has been named,so i would look at your horses personality and color and name him accordingly.when i used to ride saddle bronks ones named thunder and killer wouldnt even get a second glance but mention ones named daisy mae and sugar foot and you will see a bead of sweat form on even the hardest cowboys brow,so in other words name him something that he will live with for the rest of his life.as for breaking a horse,i dont start my horses untill they are at least two and wont saddle break them untill they are at least three so their minds and bodys have matured.on a ranch you want reliability, strength and easy keeping from our horses.

  3. color could help but i suggest a person or something u prefer because i named my 3yr old gelding pilgrim after the horse from the horse whisperer because hes a thouroughbred and hes chestnut. Gorgeous horse. and i broke him @ 2 going on 3.

  4. name him something out of greek or arabic mythology.!!

  5. Some people break their horses at two.  We wait until they are three so their joints are fully developed before putting weight on them. I think it gives the horse a better long term soundness.

What does the horse look like?

  6. my horses were broke anywhere from age 2-4 also my favorite horse names r Cobalt, Cochise, Billy Bob, Garnett, Eclipse, and Hollister. Good Luck!!!!

  7. Jasper

    Tobey

    Dakota

    Apollo

    Dusty

    Rusty

    Prince Caspian

    Bailey

    Hunter

    Dante

    Blackjack

    Julian

    Oliver

    Sisco

    Rebel

Gemini(or whatever his birth sign is)

  8. i think you should name him something like sugar

  9. What breed and age is this horse, some knees don't close until 3 or older some as soon as 2????  Depends on a few things need more info, I'm guessing he's a gelding?  (castrated)

    Slick-Judge-Cheif-King-Caeser-Bucket-F... what color is he?

    and enjoy your new horse.

  10. It would be easier to suggest some names if we knew what color and breed, but here are some ideas for both barn names and show names:

    Tate

    Tucker

    Charlie

    Chet

Majority Rules (Major for a barn name)

Wily Coyote (Wily for barn name)

    Jasper

    Zeke

    Ragin' Cajun

    Moon Man

Stroker's Ace (Ace for barn name)

Jack of Hearts (Jack for barn name)

St. Elmo's Fire (Elmo for barn name)

Saint Elsewhere (Saint for barn name)

    Chicago

    Dakota

    Zion

Also, we start our horses at 2 and work them only for about 15 minutes at a time.  We build up the time as they get stronger and fill out more.  I had one horse who was kind of scrawny at 2, so I waited until he was 3 to start him.

  11. George.  Age 3 1/2 at minimum (for saddle breaking).

  12. Is he registered? If so you may be able to create a "barn" name from that. I had to do that with a recent horse I bought, he reg. name is Ima Blackburn 04(I forgot the last number..) and I found in her pedigree the name Lena...something so her new name is Lena. But if he's not registered then go on something like based on his color, personality etc.

Also the best breaking age is closer to 3 since their growing is coming to an end, but start light!

  13. Um....if hes black call him pepper!!!!!

  14. Hello, I believe the right age to break a horse is 2-3 years of age. These are the years younger horses are more eager to learn and pay attention. Naming a horse should be thought about by his/her temperament and personality. If he is quiet and gentle go for something along the lines of Whisper. If he has a more wild side give him a name like Flame or Firecracker. If he is just the perfect horse for you and has your type of temperament, just name him Ami, which is friend in French. [Ami is a friend that is a boy in French] Hope I have helped and have a nice life with your horse.

  16. I think what you name him could depend on his color.

As for what age to break him, I would say atleast age 3 or preferably 4.

Unless you are going to race him, don't break him at 2.

  17. I think FOLGORE is a great name for your horse, especially if it's really fast.
